Benjamin D. Zelman
Vice President, Pharmaceutical Management and Business Development
Ben Zelman is Vice President of Pharmaceutical Management and Business Development for Medical Mutual. His responsibilities include direction and oversight of the Company’s pharmacy benefit programs, enhancing the customer data reporting function, and management of the dental and vision product lines. He also provides executive leadership for Medical Mutual’s consumer and group purchaser Web portals.
With experience in healthcare information systems development, care management, utilization analysis and insurance product development, Mr. Zelman has worked in both corporate and entrepreneurial settings. He joined Medical Mutual in 1984 and until 1988 managed new program development for the Company. Mr. Zelman then left to pursue an entrepreneurial venture, spending six years as a principal at INSURx, Inc., a pharmaceutical benefits management firm that is now owned by Medco Health Solutions. He then became a Product Manager at Conceptual Systems Corporation, a physician practice management systems company.
Mr. Zelman rejoined Medical Mutual in 1994 as Director, Utilization and Network Management. In 1997, he was named Vice President of Care Management, responsible for care management, medical review, medical policy, case management, disease management, and behavioral health review. His responsibilities also included HEDIS reporting and pharmaceutical therapy analysis.
In 2000, he was tapped to run the Company’s prescription drug discount card program, SaveWell. Two years later he was charged with the overall responsibility for management of the Company’s pharmaceutical benefits, an increasingly challenging area of health insurance financing.
Mr. Zelman has been involved in establishing many of the Company’s new business ventures, including roles in worker’s compensation managed care, Medicare market program development and SaveWell. He has a bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University and has completed graduate courses in Healthcare Finance, Operations Management and Computer Science at the Case Weatherhead School of Management. Mr. Zelman is also an occasional guest lecturer in Health Systems Management at the Weatherhead School.
Mr. Zelman is a member of the board of Karamu House in Cleveland.
