MEDICAL MUTUAL OF OHIO STATEMENT CONCERNING THE DEATH OF KENT CLAPP

We are devastated to learn that our Chairman, President and CEO Kent Clapp, and his fiancée, Tracy Turner, died in a plane crash on Wednesday while returning home from a Caribbean vacation. Although positive identification is pending, it is believed that all onboard, Kent, Tracy and the pilot did not survive. The investigation into the cause of the accident continues. Kent and Tracy missed their commercial flight while returning from the British Virgin Islands. They opted to book a charter flight. The twin-engine plane in which they were passengers was en route to Puerto Rico when it crashed into a mountain approximately 13 miles east of San Juan at around the noon hour.

It is difficult to put into words the loss we are feeling. Kent took the helm of the Company in 1997 during a very difficult time. It was his leadership and hard work that turned Medical Mutual into a success and an industry leader. That will be Kent’s legacy. His priorities were twofold; his employees, and his customers.

As Kent would have wished, we are conducting business as usual. Despite his untimely death, one of the many benefits of Kent’s vision and leadership is that he hired talented people. During these difficult days, those same people are continuing Medical Mutual’s fine service to our customers as we do each and every day.

The Company is making grief counselors available at Medical Mutual’s Cleveland headquarters and Toledo facility. Additionally, a toll-free telephone number has also been established for any employee who needs assistance.

Our entire Medical Mutual family is in a state of mourning. As we all grieve, please keep Kent and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
