Many of us can recall a younger version of ourselves and the thought we had of what we wanted to be when we grew up. Some of us dreamed big, others drew inspiration from what was familiar and around us, but for Mary McKenzie, it was a project in third grade that, over time, became her reality.

“The project, called Magnificent Marvelous Me was an exercise in describing who I was and what I wanted my future goals to be,” she said. “I wanted to help people and even the third grade Mary knew nursing was the way for me to do just that.”

Many years later, while Mary was working on her nursing degree at Cuyahoga Community College, she found herself unable to make ends meet financially, forcing her to take a year off to save enough for tuition. “There were many times life got in the way, but each time, I knew who I was meant to be, and nothing was going to stop me.”

In her return to school, Mary was selected to become a Medical Mutual Scholar, awarding her both financial assistance as well as an extra shot of confidence. “Being a Medical Mutual Scholar meant that I had people who believed in me and what my future could be. They invested in me, and now I can give back to my community as a nurse.”

Today, Mary works as an RN at MetroHealth in the burn intensive care unit. She is not only living her dream and caring for others but hopes to inspire others to stay consistent. She encourages others to never giving up on becoming what you know deep down you’re meant to be.

Next, Mary plans on pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
