Medicare Supplement Enrollment and Eligibility

Private insurance companies, like Medical Mutual, offer Medicare Supplement Plans to help cover the gap between the amount Medicare Parts A and B pay and your out-of-pocket expenses. These are also sometimes called Medigap plans. These plans help pay for things like deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and care received while traveling outside the U.S.

You can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan at the beginning of the month you turn 65 and are covered by Medicare Part B. This is known as your Open Enrollment Period, which lasts six months and gives you a guaranteed right to buy any Medicare Supplement Insurance plan regardless of your health status but you may be subject to underwriting.

If you are over 65 and delay your Medicare Part B enrollment, your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period will also be delayed. The six-month period will not start until the first day of the month in which your Part B coverage begins.

You may also be able to enroll if you are under the age of 65. Check with the Social Security Administration to see if any additional open enrollment periods are available.

You cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medicare Supplement plan at the same time. If you want to drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Part A and B with Medicare Supplement, there are only a couple situations that allow you to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan without being subject to medical underwriting.

If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan during your Initial Enrollment Period, but you aren’t happy with the plan, you have special rights to purchase a Medicare Supplement plan (if you return to Original Medicare within 12 months of joining).

If you move to a part of the state not served by your Medicare Advantage plan, you also have special rights to return to Original Medicare and enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan.
