Accreditation

The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) is a not-for-profit organization that sets the standards by which healthcare quality is measured. Its mission is to continually improve the safety and quality of care provided to the public through the provision of healthcare accreditation and related services that support performance improvement in healthcare organizations.

JCAHO evaluates the quality and safety of care for more than 15,000 healthcare organizations. To maintain and earn accreditation, organizations must have an extensive on-site review by a team of healthcare professionals, at least once every three years. The purpose of the review is to evaluate the organization's performance in areas that affect your care. When a healthcare organization has shown that its performance meets this level of excellence, it becomes "Accredited."

Quality Check® is a comprehensive guide to the more than 15,000 JCAHO accredited healthcare organizations and programs throughout the United States. This guide contains Quality Reports that can help you choose quality healthcare services. You can view the Quality Reports by clicking on the link below:

It is important to note that Quality Check® is only one way to determine whether a healthcare organization can meet your needs. Discuss this report with your doctor or with other professional acquaintances before making a care decision. In addition to the accreditation status of the organization, the Quality Report uses checks, pluses, and minuses in each of the key areas to help you compare a healthcare organization with similar accredited organizations.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) is an independent not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of America's healthcare. NCQA is renewing the Full Accreditation of the SuperMed Plus and OhioMed Preferred Provider organizations (PPO), which last year became the first such accreditations for PPO in the nation. The committee evaluated the company's PPO plan in the areas of Consumer Protection, Member Services, Access to Care, Provider Credentialing, and Medical Group Oversight.

Medical Mutual has earned an Excellent Accreditation for its HMO Health Ohio, SuperMed HMO and SuperMed Select plans from NCQA. Excellent Accreditation is the highest level awarded to a health maintenance organization (HMO) and/or a point of service (POS) plan by the NCQA. Expert NCQA surveyors reviewed Medical Mutual's HMO and POS plans in six areas: Quality Improvement, Utilization Management, Credentialing, Member Rights and Responsibilities, Preventive Health and Medical Records.

Medical Mutual now has all of its commercial managed-care products accredited at NCQA's highest level. Product accreditation gives Medical Mutual a competitive advantage in the marketplace, telling customers we have met the standard of accountability for managed care through following the best practices in our industry.
