MEDICAL MUTUAL OF OHIO IS BACK IN THE LIFE INSURANCE BUSINESS
Cleveland – After a 10-year absence Medical Mutual of Ohio, the state’s oldest and largest health insurance company, has returned to selling life insurance products through its Consumers Life subsidiary.
Medical Mutual sold its Medical Life Insurance Company (MedLife) in 1997 to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, the terms of which included a 10-year non-compete clause. The clause expired December 31, 2007. Shortly after the New Year, Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame became the first group signed.
Rick Chiricosta, president of Medical Mutual’s life group, is also no stranger to the industry. He was MedLife’s chief financial officer from 1989 to 1998.
According to Chiricosta, selling through the Consumer’s Life subsidiary gives Medical Mutual’s new life insurance product enormous reach. “Consumers Life is licensed to sell life, disability and health insurance in 35 states plus the District of Columbia, while Medical Mutual is licensed only to sell health insurance,” said Chiricosta. “We are now selling in Ohio, Indiana, South Carolina, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Michigan and the product will be expanded to include Georgia in June.”
Chiricosta also said the new life insurance company is a perfect fit for Medical Mutual and Consumers Life’s health insurance products. “The life group’s long-term goal is to sell a full product line in every state where Consumers Life holds a license. We are off to a great start.”
With the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame being the first to sign with Consumers Life, Chiricosta added that another big name signed in early May. The Cincinnati Reds Major League Baseball club became the latest to join the new Consumers Life family.
