January 12, 2009
CLEVELAND – Medical Mutual of Ohio announced today that Rick Chiricosta has been selected President and CEO of Medical Mutual of Ohio, effective Feb. 1. In addition, Chiricosta will hold a seat on the company’s Board of Directors.
Chiricosta succeeds Kent W. Clapp who was killed in a plane crash in Puerto Rico with his fiancée December 3, 2008.
Currently, Chiricosta is President, Life Group for Consumers Life Insurance Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Medical Mutual. He also serves as Medical Mutual of Ohio’s Executive Vice President for Mergers and Acquisitions, responsible for the financial aspects of Medical Mutual’s strategic transactions.
“I am thrilled with the board’s unanimous endorsement and ready to continue the fine legacy of Kent Clapp in driving our family of companies forward,” said Chiricosta. “I have always been impressed with the dedication and hard work of our employees and I am eager to lead them to meet the business challenges ahead.”
Chiricosta originally joined Medical Mutual in 1986 as Controller of the Western Division. In 1989, he became Chief Financial Officer for Medical Life Insurance Company, then a wholly owned subsidiary of Medical Mutual. He held that position until 1998, when he left Medical Life to become Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for National Interstate Corporation, a specialty property and casualty insurance company. In 1999, Chiricosta returned to Medical Mutual as Vice President of Finance. In November 2006, he was named to his current positions.
“Rick was a unanimous choice for the position,” said Samuel F. Miller, interim co-chairman of Medical Mutual’s board of directors. “Rick is well-rounded, knows the company and its people well and has done a great job with Medical Mutual’s re-entry into the life insurance business in 2008.”
An Avon Lake resident, Chiricosta earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, from the University of Toledo in 1978. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1980 and in 1993 received a Masters of Business Administration degree from Bowling Green State University.
A member of both the American Institute of CPAs and the Ohio Society of CPAs, Chiricosta has also earned a FLMI (Fellow, Life Management Institute) designation. Chiricosta volunteers his financial expertise as a board member for the Broadway School of Music and the Arts in Cleveland and for the Kidney Foundation of Ohio. He is also a graduate of the 2006 class of Leadership Cleveland.
