Building Bright Beginnings Through Baby & Me Kits

At Medical Mutual, supporting healthier communities means looking beyond healthcare coverage alone. It means helping families access the tools and opportunities that support lifelong well-being. We're proud to support Cuyahoga County Public Library's (CCPL) Baby & Me Kits program, which introduces new parents to early learning and literacy from their child's very first days.
When a family welcomes a new baby, the days that follow are filled with excitement, adjustment and countless new experiences. Through our partnership with CCPL, we're helping families navigate that new chapter with confidence, connection and support.
For nearly three decades, CCPL has helped parents foster a love of reading in their children. What began in 1997 as a small packet encouraging families to visit their local library has evolved into the Baby & Me Kits program. Distributed to new parents through MetroHealth, the kits are included with the materials families receive as they head home with their new baby, placing early learning tools directly into families' hands from the very beginning.
Each kit includes literacy tips, rhymes, reading recommendations, a growth chart and books that help families build an at-home library. These early literacy activities support healthy brain development during a critical period of growth and encourage meaningful interactions that help lay the foundation for future learning. Just as importantly, the kits introduce families to their local library, reinforcing that they have a welcoming place to turn for books, programs and support as their children grow.
"Cuyahoga County Public Library strives to help parents embrace their role as their child's first and best teacher," said CCPL Learning and Literacy Director Rebecca Ranallo. "The library provides resources and support for families every step of the journey, from a child's earliest years through a lifelong love of learning."
Medical Mutual's donation helps ensure the program can continue reaching families throughout Northeast Ohio, expanding access to early literacy opportunities and strengthening connections between parents, children and their communities.
“We have been so fortunate to partner with Medical Mutual on issues related to social determinants of health and digital literacy,” Ranallo said. By supporting programs like Baby & Me Kits, Medical Mutual is helping give families a strong start, strengthening community connections and investing in the well-being of future generations.
