How Medical Mutual Filled a Critical Gap in Neighborhood Healthcare

In Cleveland’s Jefferson neighborhood, a shuttered retail pharmacy has found a new purpose as the W. 130th Community Health Center (CHC) — an expanded, community-focused site, and one of seven such sites operated by Neighborhood Family Practice (NFP). The move marks a significant step toward improving access to care in a neighborhood that has seen multiple pharmacy closures in recent years.
The new health center, which opened in March 2025, replaced NFP’s former 5,000-square-foot clinic at Lorain Avenue and West 117th Street, which had outgrown its capacity. Located just a half mile west, the W. 130th CHC offers more than 10,000 square feet — doubling the space and enabling NFP to serve more patients with primary care, behavioral health and dental services — all under one roof. Not only did this increase their physical space, but it also enabled NFP to expand the number of primary care and dental providers. The location remains walkable for many patients, preserving accessibility while expanding impact.
A 2025 grant from the Medical Mutual of Ohio Charitable Foundation helped fund essential operating costs during the center’s ramp-up period, allowing NFP to focus on delivering care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. The center is expected to serve more than 3,000 patients in its first year. In late 2025, the center opened NFP’s third pharmacy, filling a critical gap left by the recent closures of CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid locations in the area. By supporting this expansion, Medical Mutual empowered NFP to deliver essential care exactly where it is most vital, reinforcing our shared vision to be innovative allies for providers.
