Medical Mutual Leads Investment in The Centers’ H.O.P.E. Campus

On a bitter winter evening in 2022, an ambulance pulls up to the Jane Edna Hunter Building, Cuyahoga County’s child services headquarters. Inside is a young girl in a mental health crisis. The driver has nowhere else to take her. With no placement available, she’ll spend several nights in an office building meant for paperwork, not healing. Inside, experienced, capable professionals do what they can. They aren’t supposed to be spending nights in cubicles, providing emergency care. With no end in sight, they do it anyway. They cared for between one and 11 children every night that year, waiting for the services and housing they desperately need and deserve.
One morning in April 2025, still cold but filled with resolve, Medical Mutual representatives join leaders from the community, from different backgrounds and sectors, for a gathering at the historic Cleveland Christian Home site. They’ve convened to break ground on an innovative public-private partnership — a new facility designed to change the course for children enduring nights at the Jane Edna Hunter Building. Rebranded as The Centers’ H.O.P.E. Campus, this aptly named space will offer therapeutic care, residential treatment and critical emergency shelter to foster youth with complex needs.
Today, the campus is already welcoming children and will be fully operational — with six renovated wings and specialized units — by summer 2026. Communities across the country are studying the H.O.P.E. Campus as a model to help address what is, in fact, a nationwide crisis. Medical Mutual was a lead funder for the H.O.P.E. Campus and the first corporate donor to step forward. Launching this project reflects our commitment to advocating for those who cannot advocate for themselves. This isn’t just a building. It’s a promise that no child in crisis will be left without safety, support or someone to fight for them.
