Another key reason Medical Mutual is different than other companies is our history. We were one of the pioneers of health insurance, and have a long track record of providing our customers with the health benefits they need. We have been a trusted insurer since 1934, and the oldest and largest health insurance company headquartered in the state of Ohio.
In 1926, Elyria Memorial Hospital administrator John R. Mannix began experimenting with the idea of hospital pre-payment and the basic principles of health insurance coverage. This eventually led to the formation of the Cleveland Hospital Service Association (CHSA) in 1934. It was the first health insurance company established in Ohio and the seventh in the nation, as well as the first to offer access to multiple hospitals.
From this promising beginning, several key milestones occurred:
- CHSA joined forces in 1945 with Medical Mutual of Cleveland, a new insurance program formed to provide coverage for doctors’ fees.
- Over the years, CHSA transformed itself first into a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan.
- In 1997, the company left the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and re-claimed the name of one of its predecessors, becoming the present day Medical Mutual of Ohio.
- Today, Medical Mutual is a multi-faceted company with health insurance at its core.
