If you’re looking for lower out-of-pocket costs and a lower monthly payment, Medicare Supplement Plan N (also known as Medigap Plan N) may be a good choice. To help keep your monthly payments lower, the plan uses a cost-sharing structure. Medicare Supplement Plan N covers 100 percent of your Original Medicare Part B coinsurance costs, with two exceptions. You are responsible for paying:

  • $20 office visit copay
  • $50 emergency room copay (unless you are admitted to the hospital)

In addition to covering your Original Medicare Part B coinsurance, Medicare Supplement Plan N covers:

  • Medicare Supplement Plan A benefits
    • Hospitalization copayments and coinsurance
    • 365 additional days of hospitalization after Original Medicare benefits end
    • Care in a hospice facility
    • The first three pints of blood you receive from a blood bank each year
    • Other medical expenses for Medicare-approved services/supplies
  • Skilled nursing facility coverage
  • Emergency medical care benefits while traveling outside the U.S.
  • Coverage for your Original Medicare Part A deductible (your Part B deductible is not covered)

Medicare Supplement Plan N does not cover your Original Part B deductible or Part B excess charges. If you’re looking for a plan that covers these costs, you may want Medicare Supplement Plan F.

Coverage for Skilled Nursing Facility Care

Original Medicare covers skilled nursing facility care if you have been in a hospital for at least three days and enter a Medicare-approved facility within 30 days of your hospital discharge.

Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement Plan N work together to pay for skilled nursing facility care. Here’s an example of how it works:

  • Day 1 through 20 – Original Medicare covers all approved amounts.
  • Day 21 through 100 – Medicare covers your costs except for $167.50 a day. Plan N pays for the $167.50 daily charge.
  • Day 101 and beyond – You have to pay 100 percent of the costs. Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement Plan N do not cover these costs.

Foreign Travel Emergency Medical Care Benefits

Original Medicare does not cover costs for medical treatment outside the United States.

Medicare Supplement Plan N helps pay for medically-necessary emergency care services during the first 60 days of each trip outside the U.S.

Eighty percent of these costs (up to $50,000 during your lifetime) are covered by Plan N after you pay your $250 deductible.
