Getting support for your mental well-being shouldn’t feel out of reach. Telehealth makes it easier for people to connect with a therapist or psychiatrist and receive the care they need. Virtual visits provide a simple, convenient alternative to in-person visits. As virtual care continues to grow, telehealth is a practical, reliable way for people to access the mental health they need on their own terms.

With virtual visits, you can talk to a mental health provider from wherever you feel most comfortable. It’s a simple, convenient way to get the care you need without the extra hurdles. Medical Mutual brings these services right to you, so help is always within reach.

Telehealth improves access to care

Accessing mental health care in person isn’t always possible. Telehealth appointments can be scheduled just as you would for an in-person visit. This option removes barriers by making it easier for people to connect with qualified professionals no matter where they live. Factors that can derail easier access to mental health services include:

  • Location
  • Transportation
  • Mobility
  • A specialized provider located far from home

Expanded access ensures you can get the support they need in a way that meets them where they are. And with some telehealth platforms allowing you to choose a provider who aligns with your specific needs, care becomes even more personalized and accessible. Additionally, you can choose on-demand telehealth visits as an alternative to going to an urgent care center. Keep in mind that a telehealth appointment may not be appropriate for your medical condition, and you may need to see your provider in-person to receive treatment.

Telehealth offers convenience and flexibility

You deal with a busy schedule every week: work or school, daily responsibilities, social obligations. This can make it challenging to find time for mental health appointments. Telehealth offers a level of convenience that fits your real life. Many providers offer flexible scheduling, including evening or weekend sessions. Some can even connect you with a therapist within 24 hours, which can be crucial when someone needs support right away and can’t wait for a standard opening. This flexibility makes it easier to get support when you need it and to stick with therapy consistently. By making care more accessible and manageable, telehealth can help you maintain your mental well-being over time.

Finding comfort through telehealth options

Discussing health concerns in any capacity can be uncomfortable. Mental health concerns can cover heavy topics and emotions, like anxiety and depression, which can be especially difficult to address. Creating the right setting can alleviate feelings of discomfort and help you open up more to your mental healthcare provider.

Telehealth offers the ability to participate in your healthcare from the comfort of your home or any private setting. Connecting virtually can also feel less intimidating than meeting in-person. This convenience can help you feel more relaxed, allowing you to be more open to discussing sensitive issues and contribute to a more effective appointment.

How to prepare for a telehealth appointment

Your healthcare provider will let you know what you will need for your telehealth visit. Consider the following steps ahead of time to make the most out of your telehealth appointment:

  • Have the necessary technology: You will need a device with a camera, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer ahead of your appointment.
  • Pre-appointment checklist: Be sure to install any necessary apps. Test your device’s microphone, camera and internet connection well before logging in for your visit.
  • Come prepared: Bring your medical information, including a list of medications you’re taking, any symptoms you’re experiencing, health concerns and questions you may have for your provider.

How to ensure privacy and discretion with a telehealth appointment

Telehealth appointments follow the same confidentiality standards as in-person visits. Mental healthcare providers use secure communication platforms to conduct virtual appointments and protect your information. Without the need for a waiting room or public office setting, many people feel a greater sense of discretion and reduced stigma when seeking support.

For additional privacy, it’s important to take the appointment in a quiet, secluded setting. Avoid public places where others can see or hear. For safety, don’t take an appointment while driving or doing any activities that could distract you from the conversation.

What are the coverage and cost of telehealth appointments?

Your health plan determines how virtual visits are covered. Generally speaking, scheduled telehealth appointments are covered the same as a standard office visit and vary based on the type of provider you’re seeing. Medicare Advantage members can view their Evidence of Coverage at MedMutual.com/MAPlanInfo or call Customer Care for more details about cost-sharing amounts for provider visits. Members not on Medicare can access their Certificate or Benefit Book by logging into My Health Plan. Look for it in the “Benefits & Coverage” menu.
