Medicare Advantage plan extras, or value-added benefits, often include things such as wellness programs (like SilverSneakers®), transportation to doctor visits, over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and supplies, and other health-related services. Here are some details:

  • Wellness Programs  Programs like SilverSneakers® can help you maintain high levels of physical activity and provide ways to meet new people. As a result of COVID-19, many wellness programs have added virtual classes so people can stay active without going to the gym. Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer personalized, individual health coaching and discounted memberships to popular weight-loss programs such as WW® (formerly Weight Watchers).
  • Over-the-Counter (OTC) Items – Some Medicare Advantage plans will provide you with a fixed amount of money to spend on a wide range of over-the-counter medicines, supplies and personal care items. Examples include items such as bandages, aspirin and cough medicine. You would usually order from a catalog of select items that are eligible for purchase, and the items would be shipped directly to your home.
  • Benefits After a Hospital Stay – There is a lot to consider when you are being discharged from an inpatient hospital stay. Most Medicare Advantage plans want to help by offering discharge planning, transportation services and meal delivery, all at no additional cost to you. Getting help can be as easy as going online or calling a customer service line.

If extras like these are important to you, make sure you do your homework and find the coverage that is right for you.

Now that you know about some of the “extras” Medicare Advantage plans tend to have, our next posts will go into more depth about what Medicare can offer.
