Everything ages – cars, homes, even our smartphones – and each needs regular care to stay in good condition. Our bodies are no different. As we grow older, routine health check-ins become an important way to keep everything functioning smoothly. One of the best ways to support you in maintaining and improving your overall physical and mental health is through a physical exam with your primary care provider (PCP).

For many Medical Mutual members, this visit becomes the first step toward better health – much like one high‑risk member who, after struggling without a PCP or access to their online health plan, began making meaningful progress once he connected with the right support.

What is an annual physical exam?

An annual physical exam, called a physical for short, is an evaluation of your general health done by your PCP. The focus is to identify potential health risks before they become a problem. During the appointment, your PCP may:

  • Perform a full-body exam
  • Review your medical and family history
  • Measure your height, weight and vitals
  • Assess social environment and lifestyle factors, like smoking or substance use
  • Review any personal health concerns or symptoms

Your PCP may order additional testing following a physical exam, like X-rays or blood tests. Always check with your PCP beforehand to see what is and isn’t covered with your health insurance plan. For some members, these early evaluations can be life‑changing for their care journey.

What should you discuss during your annual physical exam?

Your annual physical is the perfect time to talk openly with your PCP about any changes in your health, no matter how small or hard to describe. Be sure to mention anything new or concerning, even if it feels awkward or embarrassing. Sharing details helps your PCP understand what you’re experiencing and support you in ways that genuinely improve your day-to-day life. This can be for:

  • Changes in your sleep, appetite, mood, memory, activity levels or pain
  • Bladder control concerns
  • Balance issues or any recent falls

Don’t be afraid to speak openly. Your PCP talks about these topics every day and discussing them can help you find relief. Discussing these topics early helps your provider spot patterns, address concerns, and create a plan that supports your overall physical and mental well‑being long-term.

Many members see better outcomes when they share openly – just as one high‑risk member did while working with his Care Navigator to complete a Social Determinants of Health assessment, coordinate cardiology follow‑ups and resolve equipment issues. With steady support, he moved from uncertainty to actively managing his health and staying on track with preventive care.

For a list of topics to discuss with your PCP during your visit, Medical Mutual offers a provider checklist with common questions that cover both physical and emotional health.
