PPO plans and HMO plans offer similar benefits, but there are some differences you should be aware of.
PPO plans generally cost more than HMO plans, but they give you a larger network of doctors and hospitals for more choice and flexibility. With a PPO plan, you also have coverage if you use an out-of-network provider, but this will usually have higher costs.
HMO plans tend to be more affordable, but you usually have a smaller network with more restrictions. With an HMO plan, you must use the network of doctors and hospitals. If you use an out-of-network provider, you will not be covered except for emergency care, out-of-area urgent care or out-of-area dialysis.
