Private insurance companies, like Medical Mutual, offer Medicare Supplement Plans to help cover the gap between the amount Medicare Parts A and B pay and your out-of-pocket expenses. These are also sometimes called Medigap plans. These plans help pay for things like deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and care received while traveling outside the U.S.

Eligibility and Options

If you already have Medicare Parts A and B, you can sign up for a Medigap plan with any private insurance company that offers them. There are ten different coverage options available.

Medical Mutual offers Medicare Supplement Insurance plans A, C, F, High-deductible F, G and N. Only applicants first eligible for Medicare before 2020 may purchase plans C, F and High-deductible F. You can compare our Medicare Supplement plan coverage here  to determine which is the best fit for your needs.

Medigap Enrollment

You can enroll in a Medigap plan at the beginning of the month you turn 65 and are covered by Medicare Part B. This is known as your open enrollment period, which lasts six months and gives you a guaranteed right to buy any Medicare Supplement Insurance policy sold in Ohio regardless of your health status. You may be able to enroll outside of this period, but the private insurance company may choose to underwrite the plan. That means you may have to have a physical before they agree to provide coverage and your premium could be dependent on the results.

If you are over 65 and delay Medicare Part B enrollment, your Medicare Supplement open enrollment period will also be delayed. The six-month period will not start until the first day of the month in which your Part B coverage begins.

You may also be able to enroll if you are under the age of 65. Check with the Social Security Administration to see if any additional open enrollment periods are available.

You cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap plan at the same time. If you want to drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Part A and B with Medigap, there are only a couple situations that allow you to pick up a Medigap plan without being subject to medical underwriting.

If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan during your Initial Enrollment Period, but you aren’t happy with the plan, you have special rights to buy a Medigap policy (if you return to Original Medicare within 12 months of joining).

If you move to a part of the state not served by your Medicare Advantage plan, you also have special rights to return to Original Medicare and pick up a Medigap plan.
